The NurtureNextGen project was recently presented at the 48th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA), a major conference for clinicians, researchers and health professionals working across genetics and genomic medicine. The project’s abstract was selected for an oral presentation in the “Top Abstracts” category, recognising its relevance to contemporary genetic practice and family-centred care. Project co-leads Erin Turbitt and Lizzie Callinan presented the work.
The presentation, NurtureNextGen: Codesigning a Digital Tool to Support Families of Children with Genetic Neurodevelopmental Conditions, shared early findings from interviews with parents and a multidisciplinary design process. The work highlighted how parents experience prognosis conversations, particularly when communication focuses on deficit-based framing, and outlined initial design concepts for a strengths-based digital support tool. These concepts were developed through reflexive thematic analysis and structured brainstorming, drawing together expertise from genetic counselling, psychology, human-computer interaction and lived experience.
Presenting at HGSA highlights the project’s strong connection to clinical genetics and family-centred practice. Alongside engagement with design and technology-focused research communities, this reflects NurtureNextGen’s interdisciplinary approach to translating research insight into practical support for families.
